The first military tethered balloon : the Entreprenant in Fleurus 1794
The educated and the military quickly understood that a captive balloon could be an excellent observatory on the battlefield.
April 2, 1794 : An aerostatic company was created under the orders of Jean-Marie Coutelle.
June 2, 1794 : "The Entreprenant" ascensions over Maubeuge were besieged by the Austrians.
June 26, 1794 : "Les Aerostatiers" contributed to Fleurus' victory by recommendation of the Major of State of the General Jourdan.
"Les Aerostiers" participated in military operations in Austria and Italy.
Nevertheless, the difficult transportation of the aerostats and the construction of their hydrogen stove poorly accompanied the movement of war which bothered the French Generals.
Finally, by decree on February 18, 1799, the aeronauts were fired and the school in Meudon closed.
